Commonly Asked Questions about WordPerfect for Macintosh
Question
I dislike the Geneva font that the Macintosh uses as a default. I have been setting my font for every document—is there an easier way?
Answer
Version 2.1 has default Styles stored in your USA-Private Library that format certain features. If you want every new document you open to be formatted a certain way, you can edit the Normal Style.
Question
As a user of the 1.0 version of WordPerfect, I miss the ability to use the buttons at the bottom of the screen to access bold, underline, or different styles of text. Is there a similar feature in version 2.1?
Answer
In version 2.1 you can access the same Style Buttons. Choose Preferences from the File menu, then choose Environment. Choose Show Style Buttons, from the Windows pull-down menu. These remain on your screen for every document until you change them. In the Environment dialog box, you can set a variety of other options (see Environment in your WordPerfect Macintosh reference manual).
Question
I used WordPerfect 5.1 for the IBM PC until moving to a new job. Can I use the familiar 5.1 keystrokes with WordPerfect 2.1 for Macintosh?
Answer
Version 2.1 includes a keyboard similar to 5.1 in the Keyboard file in your Documentation Folder. Open the file and follow the instructions for adding a resource to your Private Library. Once the WP 5.x keyboard has been added to your Private Library, you can access it by choosing Preferences from the File menu, then choosing Keyboards. With version 2.1, you can also create your own keyboard using the Keyboard Management dialog box.
Question
I want to use the numeric keypad on my extended keyboard. When I start WordPerfect the numbers are turned off.
Answer
To turn Num Lock on, hold down the Shift then press Clear on the upper left of the number keypad.
Question
I have several unique styles that I use in my documents. When I take them to a coworkers's machine their styles overwrite mine, and my documents look different. How can I prevent this?
Answer
You can copy your Normal style and whatever other styles are used in your document into the document so that they will be the ones used on any machine where that document is opened. WordPerfect also provides an automatic option that copies all your styles into each new document so that they are always there.
Question
If I select the option to copy all styles into my new documents, won't that cause my documents to be unusually large?
Answer
No. Typically it will add about 3-5K of file size.
Question
Does WordPerfect have any legal features ?
Answer
Yes. WordPerfect has several legal features including: Line Numbering, Table of Authorities, Outlining, Index, Concordance files, Paragraph numbering, Stationery, Redline and Strikeout.
Question
What is the concordance feature in WordPerfect Macintosh and how does it work?
Answer
A concordance is a document that contains a list of words or phrases you want to include in an index. If you include a word in the concordance, you will not have to go through and mark every occurrence of that word in your document. To create a concordance file, open a new document and enter all the index entries. Follow each entry with a hard return. Save the document. When you generate an index you are given the option to include the concordance file. If you select this option, each entry in the concordance file becomes an entry in the index.
Question
I have noticed that several of the menu commands have keystroke equivalents listed next to them. Are there more keystroke equivalents for other commands? And how do I find out what these keystrokes are?
Answer
There are a couple of ways to find this out. In the Preferences:Environment dialog there is an option to display extra menu command keys. Turning on this option will display more keystroke equivalents. Also, holding down the command key while in any dialog will display all the available keystroke commands for options within that dialog. Another option is in the Preferences:Keyboard dialog, where you can see what keystrokes have been assigned to the various features within WordPerfect.
Question
How can I get the most use out of the Stationery feature in WordPerfect ?
Answer
A stationery document opens into an untitled window, allowing you create boilerplate or template documents to be used over and over again. WordPerfect’s Stationery feature allows you to store your stationery documents in the stationery folder and have quick access to them in a menu. Use stationery documents for fill-in forms and other repeat-use documents.
Question
WordPerfect is the only application that has a Librarian feature. What is the purpose of this feature and what does it give me that other applications don’t ?
Answer
The Librarian is a simple resource manager. The resources it manages are Styles, Macros, Conversions, Keyboards and Font Maps. One of the most difficult aspects of these resources is storing and accessibility to the user. WordPerfect allows you to store each of these resources in three different places. First they can be stored in the document. The resource then travels with the document and is available to anyone who uses the document. Second, these resources can be stored in the Private Library which is stored on the local drive. Resources stored in the private library can be accessed from within any document on that local machine. Finally, the resources can be stored in the Common Library. The common library is a network version of the private library and can be accessed by multiple users. This is the way that standardized items can be shared without everyone having to store them locally.
Question
I am a network administrator, and when our company makes changes to the standard normal style I have to go to everyone’s machine individually and make the change. How can I make a more global change ?
Answer
By taking advantage of WordPerfect’s Common Library feature, you can have your users share a common normal style and have to update it in only one location.
Question
Often I want to have several indexes in one document. How can I have more than one index in a WordPerfect document ?
Answer
Use the list feature to add additional indexes. You can define the list(s) to be generated anywhere in the document and thus have the functionality of multiple indexes.
Question
I’ve noticed that WordPerfect has a Draw Overlay and Watermark feature. What are these features and how do I use them ?
Answer
Each WordPerfect document has three layers. The main text and graphics layer is the middle layer. There is also a top layer called the Draw Overlay and a bottom level called Watermark. Both of these extra layers are graphic layers. Items placed on the draw overlay print on top of the text, while items placed in the watermark layer are placed beneath the text at print.
Question
When I import a document from WordPerfect DOS, what happens to the styles that were in that document but not applied within the text?
Answer
In DOS, WordPerfect documents styles are stored in the header of the document and are referenced only when they are used in the document. WordPerfect Macintosh reads only the contents of the styles when it encounters the style in use within the document. As a result, any styles not used within the document are not converted.
Question
What is the Subtitle feature and how does it work?
Answer
The subtitle feature gives you the ability to type text in one language and put the translation immediately below the text. This makes the creation and use of multilingual documents very easy in WordPerfect Macintosh.
